Meet Lauren! New Intern at Blackbird Attic

lauren2

"Hi my name is Lauren Marsiglio, and I am an intern for Blackbird Attic. I am currently a sophomore at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY; majoring in fashion design and minoring in fashion merchandising. On my down time I enjoy listening to music and just lounging around with my friends. My life plan includes studying abroad in Italy in Fall 2012, and after I graduate college I want to have a job in the fashion industry in NYC. Doing what in the industry I'm not quite sure yet. In this picture I have on two tops from Urban Outfitters which I have layered over each other and a pair of teal leggings from Forever 21. My jewelry is either handmade and vintage, and the boots I am wearing are vintage that I found at a thrift store."

I like Lauren's look here because it's simple and comfortable, yet stylish at the same time. The layering of necklaces works really well and I love the boots! Lauren is interning for college credit and we will be accepting interns in similar programs next semester. Anyone interested can contact me here.

Consignment at Blackbird Attic

Most of the merchandise at Blackbird Attic is on consignment. This means that you can bring us your loved but no longer worn clothing and more. We will look through your items and if we accept any into the shop and they sell, you will get 40% of the sale price. It's a great way for you to clean out your closet and make some extra cash.

You can come by any day without an appointment, preferably between 1-4pm (except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we're closed). We like to make it easy for you, so we don't have any strict rules about how many items you can bring, but it does make it easier on us if you bring 10 items or less at a time.

Items should be freshly washed, even if they've been sitting untouched in your closet. Pre-treat any stains, wash in cold water, and air dry. If the stains do not come out or if there are holes, we will not accept it. Vintage may be the exception. It always helps if you have the items button/zippered, wrinkle and pet hair less prior to us seeing them, but hangers are not necessary. Shoes, purses, etc, should be cleaned as much as possible.

What We're Specifically Looking For..

Fall & winter clothing, jewelry, accessories, footwear and decorations in trendy styles. Our target market is 18-35 year old men and women who keep up with the latest fashions.

J.Crew and Pantone Nougat - Fall 2011

In general.. Women's casual tops seem to sell the best. We LOVE things from Anthropologie and similar type stores. We also love vintage dresses, tops, jewelry, and purses. We take in small decorations and trinkets that have a vintage or trendy style. Also looking for men's shirts in small or medium sizes, recent styles or vintage. Remember, we take in new or old, but "new" items should have been bought within the past 2-3 years and in good condition. We do not take in plain shirts or tank tops, and we're being more selective with brands and conditions of shoes and jeans/pants.

Advertising!

So I have a logo, business card and lookbook photos, next comes postcards and a notepad! I am excited that I am finally getting around to doing non-internet forms of advertising. A way I describe my shop style sometimes is as a mix of Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters (who have the same parent company but market to different groups of people), so I went for two different style postcards. The first I think would appeal to my slightly older or more refined-taste crowd, while the other will target the teen/college or more funky audience. The notepad is so I can include little notes in online orders/etc. Getting a bunch of these printed from overnightprints.com (who have really reasonable rates and sales often) and hoping it will bring in new customers! Anyway, I am excited for them, what do you think?!

Blackbird Attic Postcards
(left side is the front, right is the back, actually took off the cream logo on the first one because I thought it was cluttered, but otherwise, the same)

Shop Photos September 2011

I was contacted by a publication that wanted to come interview me and take some photos of the shop. That didnt pan out, but it did motivate me to pretty up the shop a bit. I added the tree that used to be in my window to the wall, which I really like because I never know what to do with all the wall space. Any interior designers want to help? haha. Anyway, I tried to fix up some displays and took some shop photos to show you all! Enjoy, IMG_4646-2

I hope the moon is listening

I really really love love this band. Their sound is both upbeat and haunting. This is a band I can turn up really loud, rock my head and stare into space listening to. Their newest cd, On The Water, is out October 11th. Two of my favorites from their older cds. One. Two.

The Vintage Fur Debate

Someone brought to my attention that it is unfortunate I sell fur (as seen in last blog). For being pescetarian and a huge animal lover, I wanted to think this through further. My first winter at the shop I had people asking if I would sell their vintage fur coats for them and I was pretty opposed to the idea. Somewhere along the way, I was brought smaller pieces with hints of vintage fur on them and got more used to them. I liked the idea of the item being re-used and not filling up a landfill, which would not seem to honor the animal who gave its life. That's why I have decided that if I do come across an item with vintage fur, I will donate a large percentage of the sale to an animal charity. Perhaps for every vintage fur sale, one less new fur will be purchased, and one day one can only hope, produced.
