Catching Up

Hello everyone! I have been a bad blogger.. so let's catch up..

Recently my sister has come to Beacon to help out at the shop. With the extra hands I've finally achieved my goal of getting more things online. Right now there are a variety of vintage purses and dresses on my etsy. There are a couple items on eBay at the moment as well, including two Marc Jacobs tops. I also took pictures of a bunch of the women's tops and men's top that are in store. Everything is available for shipment. I'll be putting things on etsy (vintage and handmade) more frequently now and also try to have a photo inventory of many of the items in the shop on my facebook page. I've marked a lot of things down in store for a spring cleaning sale. I'm also doing a written questionnaire in store, if you stop by and fill it out you have the chance to win a $30 gift certificate! I'll be doing more promos in the upcoming months including a frequent buyer card.



We changed the windows up a bit, adding a lot of little birdhouses to one window, and hanging some clothes in the other. Something fresh and fun for spring. You'll be seeing some adobrable little kitties in the windows in May for our annual adoption event. Our store is also going to be used as a location for a short film and we're hoping to get a promo video out of that as well.

Also important to mention! Our one year anniversary is this May! There will be an event for this..more details to come..

Lastly, just wanted to let everyone know that we are taking in items on consignment. We're looking for items for spring and summer, styles you'd find at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, or designer pieces. Also Vintage that is pre 80's, unique jewelry and accessories, and cute homewares/decorations. You can bring things by any day (except Tue/Wed), between 12-5pm.

Spring 2011 Trend Report

Quick trend report by Madison!:

Spring trends for 2011 are a mix of 70's bohemian and cute punk. With these influences come crocheted and lace clothing, tassels, maxi dresses, and wide leg pants. Many of the colors consist of pastels and abstract brights named after flowers. We will see major heights with clogs while the kitten heel adds a little elegance to your spring outfits. Hairstyles that are coming back are fringe bangs and short pixie hair. Fashion week has presented us with these trends and I can see them being well followed in the upcoming season.

Sea green is a lovely color to add to any outfit. This vintage bag would be a great accent to many outfits.



Vintage Braided Straw Pastel Peach Belt - $8
This pastel belt can be worn with almost anything. The peach color is unique and can make an outfit more lively and fun.



Vintage BUTTE KNIT Pastel Yellow Jacket - $18
This pastel yellow coat is great for spring because it is a light weight fabric and can be worn on the colder days spring brings.

American Apparel Pastel Peach Leggings - $8.50

These are a great way to wear leggings in the upcoming season. Black legging can be too dark for spring days, so wear these instead to lighten up any outfit. Wear them with a summer dress of a loose linen shirt.



Vintage BARMON Long Floral Maxi Dress - $35
Maxi dresses have been a reoccurring trend since fall 2010. This maxi dress fits well in with the 70's look coming back this spring. It would easily be paired with a belt and some sandals or clogs.

Vintage Crochet Flapper Dress - $35
This crocheted dress fits in perfectly with the 70's bohemian look. Wear it as a beach cover up, with a slip underneath, or with leggings and a tank.

Meet new intern Emily!

Hello to all, I’m Emily W. I am entering an internship at Blackbird Attic for fun and the experience. One day I hope to be a fashion buyer or fashion show coordinator. I’ve grown up to love fashion and I am intrigued with what people are wearing. Personally I would say I don’t have a specific style because one day I like to wear something dressy and the next simple and casual. I am only a sophomore in high school, but I have already started working on my fashion career. I hope to start my studies at Johnson and Wales during my senior year. I feel I have a personable and unique personality that people enjoy being around. Besides fashion, I play travel soccer and like to just hang out with my friends. I hope to get plenty of experience during my internship. Fashion isn’t just a career, it is a way of life for me.

Below are a few of my picks from Blackbird Attic's current inventory:



This Cabin Creek sweater (size medium/large) is a favorite of mine because it is so uncommon. The sweater is comfy and can be accessorized to look chic and stylish. It’s warm and perfect for a winter day of relaxing. You can pair it with black pants and your favorite chunky necklace.



This Mossimo skirt (size 6) gives a more dressy look and is perfect for a night out on the town. The gradient of colors is very pretty, and sweet, yet sexy. Add a black top and a collection of bangles for a special touch.



Plaid button ups (size large/xl) are a must have for men these days. They are fashionable yet low key. This shirt can be paired up with jeans and moccasins for a indie look, or under a sports coat for that perfect date night look. It’s casual and comfortable which every guy wants.

City Trip

We decided to make a trip to the city for a post-Valentine's/kind-of Valentine's date; as to avoid crowded restaurants and because I have *Tuesday* off at the store. The trip on the train is pretty incredible with the mountain, snow and broken up ice landscape. The warmth from sunlight against a window is one of my favorite things, and combined with the view, it doesn't make for too bad of a commute.

It's a strange thing. Heading to the city. I don't have to make the venture every day like many Beaconite - New York City workers. So to me.. it still brings up some opposing feelings, a mix of familiarity and foreignness. Not too long ago, once upon a time the summer before last summer, we were making the opposite trip. Now we're the people from upstate.

As for our trip, we went to a fondue place in the East Village called Taureau, where I was impressed with combinations that most fondue places do not offer. Then to the movies at Union Square, and lastly, met up with my friend at Beauty Bar, who I have not seen in half a year! How does that happen. Some photos..

The Field House

I came across this Seattle store name and description in Lucky magazine and I knew I had to check it out. They are a twist on an old timey general store with a nod towards simpler times,

"The Field House is reminiscent of general stores that were once at the heart of rural towns across America. Its shelves are stocked with a wide variety of merchandise, including classic work wear, vintage goods, basic groceries and candies, flowers, and perfumes and candles. It captures the history, geography, and folklore of times past, when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers."

Yeah you probably see it too, the inside photos definitely look a bit Urban Outfitters-esque, but I can see how they differentiate themselves and it really makes me want to open a similar concept store one day! Love it.
