TRENDWATCH: Boho-Chic

Boho-chic is a style of fashion inspired by bohemian and hippie influences. It has been seen since the early 90's and has repeatedly re-surfaced in varying guises. Check out some of our boho-chic pieces here at Blackbird Attic:

027
This adorable cropped top is the perfect introduction to a boho style! Pair it with anything high-waisted, add plenty of bangles, and slip on a great pair of clogs or wedges. Scroll down to see my favorite Blackbird Attic pair! (Street Flower brown velvet top; $12, L)

023
This over-sized jacket from Alafoss is neck to calves boho/nordic-chic I suggest wearing it open for an effortlessly chic look. The piece was made in Iceland from 100% pure virgin wool.
(ALAFOSS Icewool Vintage 70's coat; $45, M)

007
When it comes to boho, accessories are not to be overlooked. Consider adding pieces that reflect the same trend. I chose this fringe satchel to achieve a cohesive look. The bag is a soft, high quality, rich chocolate brown. Wear it cross-body or off your shoulder.
(60's Suede Fringe Bag; $18)

Here are some more options to take boho-chic to the next level.
002
The first piece is handcrafted by Toony Jewelrey. Long necklaces work best with boho looks and I really like the handmade look of this one (Beaded tassle necklace; $22) Next is another beaded necklace, also handmade with alternating stone and wooden beads. The boho in this one is so easily detectable. Consider matching  pieces that are less over-the-top bohemian looking with those that epitomize the trend. This keeps the outfit interesting and it lets you flaunt your creativity (Beaded necklace, on sale $5). Lastly the black braided fringe belt would work well with a maxi skirt, or a long dress ($10).

030
Lastly, these heels will pull any boho-chic look together! (Mossimo Brown Woven Heels; $13, size 7.5)

What Lauren Wore: 11.7.11

030

Today I'm wearing a vintage shirt I picked up at a thrift store called Savers in Massachusetts. I paired it with heather grey leggings from Forever 21, my White Mountain boots from DSW, and a faux leather jacket that I picked up from Marshalls for $3. The scarf was a present from my mom when she went to Italy.

Trendwatch: Winter Whites

winterwhites
Photos from stylesight.com

Fashions that challenge what’s expected are sure to leave lasting impressions. Incorporate white into your winter wardrobe with lots of layering. Clean, crisp white staple pieces are enhanced by combining textures and fabrications of a similar color palette. I love this luxurious combination of heavy fur with dainty accessories. The over-the-top fur is sure to give any outfit an expensive look and feel.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from Blackbird Attic to help white make the transition from summer to winter.

This Flirty Tunic by Free People is a great way to try your luck with layering techniques. Pair it with tights if you’re petite and add black patent heels for this year’s holiday get-togethers. (Free People Cream Sheer Lace Tunic, M; $16)

239

This Gap Sweater is trendy and functional. Dress it up or dress it down, either way it’s a great layering piece. (Gap V Neck Cream Sweater, S; $16)

241

I love the fashion-forward appeal of this dress paired with our oversized fur coat. The pleated skirt looks elegant peeking out the bottom of the fur. The ivory colored dress features an adorable peter pan collar and extends mid- calf. We recently saw this length on the streets and on the runways. (Breli Cream Pleated Dress 16; $15)(Rovercoat Arthur Jay Faux Fur Coat $45)

246

This vintage skirt is made from a heavy yet soft material. It’s totally appropriate for the approaching temperatures. (Vintage Skirt with Gold Buttons, $10)

248

Here are my picks for vintage accessories sure to bring your wardrobe up-to-date!

This adorable vintage hat is the ultimate in winter accessories. The fur has that melt-in-your -hands kind of sensation so you can only imagine what it does for you head! (Vintage Cream Fur Hat, $35)

226

I love this super girly-girl bag! Use it to add just a subtle hint of glamour to your favorite LBD; another must-have for holiday festivities. (Vintage White Beaded Handbag $10)

223

This piece has a handmade look. The simple design is classic yet visually interesting. The beads are white and pink pearl. (Vintage Beaded Necklace, sale $14)

237

And lastly, some white vintage shoes that would work well paired with tights in the cold weather.

Halloween at Blackbird Attic

We spooked it up a bit here at Blackbird. It didn't take too much effort, just a bunch of black spiderwebs and some crafts I found at Michaels! Halloween is here now and I really should have a new window planned already...ahhh...

Anyway, my Halloween festivities this year have been comprised of a bunch of scary movie nights, but I haven't really dressed up. I attempted to be beetle juice last night and it just did not work very well, haha. That's what I get for waiting till the last minute. Tonight I will be handing out candy to cute kids and indulging myself with some "special" cider. What are you all doing?

Fall Picks Video

So this just so happens to be my 100th post on the blog! I am always trying to come up with new content to keep the blog fresh. An idea I recently had was to film some items in the store to give a sort of rundown of what's in the shop. Ive done this with pictures on the facebook page, but the editing takes a lot longer than a quick video. It would be a really long video if I went through all the racks, so I decided to just pick out some items to showcase. So here it is, first video of picks.. ! I know this one is quiet and we didn't zoom in on any details, so I think we'll improve on that next time around. I want to try to do this weekly, so check back. What do you think?

Trendwatch: Tuxedo

trendwatch tuxedos

The idea of stealing from your boyfriend's closet has always been around. First it was his flannels, then it was his jeans. This fall it's the tuxedo look, featuring the pleated shirts, the jackets, and even the cummerbunds, this trend is being seen in every style and color.

Once again, I've searched through our racks to find the perfect selections for you to rock this trend.

First, we'll start with this vintage black pleated shirt by Chaus Petites. It features mini pleats all along the front, with a wider pleat down the center front to give the illusion of there being a button-less placket. The bottom of the shirt has a band of fabric, that is accented on the left side by golden buttons. Each sleeve has these buttons as well. Pair this shirt with slimmer satin dress pants; untucked, to show off the buttons of course. If you would like to be daring make those pants some color other than grey, white, or black. (Chaus Petites;10;$14)

008

The next shirt I have is a vintage Country Suburbans button down that boasts a rich champagne color. The pleats extend from the shoulders down to the hem on only a section of the front. It has buttons on the front, and on the bottom of the sleeve. This shirt also features a peter pan collar that has also popped up in fashion lately. Since this is a rich color, pair it with another rich color such as navy. Then add gold accents to keep your color palette warm. (Country Suburbans;12;Sale $7)

CountrySuburbans

Moving onto jackets I came across this beautiful one by Giorgio Armani. I picked this one to put my own twist onto the tuxedo jacket. The main thing that separates a tux from a suit is the satin accents. I played off of this by the shine in the entire jacket. I also liked the asymmetrical invisible front that looks great opened or closed. Wear this jacket over a metallic shirt to really pull out the shine. (Giorgio Armani;46;$40)

006

The next jacket is by Regina Porter. It features ruffle detailing on the front, and is therefore a less structured jacket from the tuxedo trend. The drape to this jacket helps it move with you. Wear this on a casual girls night out when you want to dress up a little. Dark skinny jeans with a white shirt paired with the perfect black heel. (Regina Porter;8;$16)

005

Last but not least is a vintage navy skirt. It is a high-waisted knee length skirt that also conveniently has front pockets. I always consider that to be a plus on skirts. The thing that brings this into the tuxedo trend is the waistband. It is a satin pleated band that pulls off the cummerbund concept. Wear this to work with a tucked in white shirt, some heels, and statement jewelry. (Vintage Skirt;X-Small;$14)

Outfit: What Lauren Wore

lauren2
Skirt - H&M
Lace vest - Charlotte Russe
Shoes - MIA via Macys
Earrings - Vintage
Rings - Forever 21 and Tiffanys
Bracelet - Vintage
Necklace - Vintage

I love wearing this vest/skirt combo. The tiers on the vest play off of those on the skirt, without being too cohesive. (Although it does always get mistaken for a dress) I stuck with silver, white, and black accessories to balance the grey. I wanted to make the blue skirt the focal point which is why it is the only color.

Day Trip: Lawrence Farms

My boyfriend and I started going to Lawrence Farms in Newburgh, NY before we even officially moved to the area. It's become somewhat of a tradition now, and how can it not be something we do every year with that kind of view! The weather was great, really sunny with a cool breeze, a perfect outdoors day and I will not complain of the added perks of apple cider and fresh sugar donuts. We picked apples, pumpkins, and pet some goats! Definitely want to try and get another orchard day in before it gets too cold.
