Home: The Vintage Kitchen

One of my favorite rooms in the house is the kitchen. Not because I'm some expert gourmet chef (not even close) but because, like many other rooms, kitchens are not one-size-fits-all. There are many ways to organize, feng shui and store things depending on your needs.

If you're short on inspiration on how to make your kitchen work for you, Pinterest will be your best friend for information as well as providing you with the DIY way to get it done.

I prefer to keep my kitchen clutter-free and love a good kitchen accessory, especially a vintage one, which is why I fell in love with these 1970's vintage canisters:

Vintage Botanic Canisters, $55 for the set.
Lit candles give the home a more welcoming vibe whether you're trying to mask some smells or just setting the mood.

"Honeybee" Soy Candle ($8) Also available in Crushed Rosemary and Spanish Lemon Verbena.
Handmade in New York City.

Stay tuned for more available home goodies from Blackbird Attic! And don't forget to vote for us for the Best Hudson Valley Business here!

A Necessary Accessory

There's something symbolic about a little girl putting on her Grandmother's pearls, staring in the mirror and falling in love with accessorizing her outfit. As we grow, we come to love all types of accessories--earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces and the like. The options with accessories are endless and you can get even more creative with expressing yourself and your style than ever before.

Pendant necklaces and chunky bib's give two completely different fashion statements. Pendants are for more of a casual day look, and chunky bibs can add some funk as well as a nighttime flare.

Handmade Pendant Necklaces, $12/each

Long necklaces are great for layering. It gives your accessory choices more dimension.
Handmade Multi-Charmer, $14/each

Charms have been a staple in the accessory world for a long time. There's just something about connecting unique trinkets together that represent what you love.

Bohemian Rhapsody- Outfit Inspirarion

Some of my favorite looks in the entire world are inspired by the "peace and love" era of the 60's and 70's. For the past 10 years or so designers have incorporated "hippie" elements into their collections and dubbed the looks "bohemian." Kate Hudson, Vanessa Hudgens and many more fashion-forward celebs rock this (hopefully) never ending trend that pays homage to a country just wanting to live in harmony (and without bras).

Stores like Free People, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters are some of the trend-setting places to continue to find up-to-date bohemian looks, and luckily, Blackbird Attic carries many pieces from them.

Style Tip 1: The gray stripe tank will look super cute with a white maxi skirt and brown boots.
Anthropologie / Eloise / Gray Stripe Button Tank / X-Small / $13.50

Anthropologie / Ric Rac / Gray Striped Top / Small / $14.50

Style Tip 2: Pair the floral tank from Anthropologie with some cut off shorts or destructed jeans for a roughed up girly look.
Anthropologie / Pinkerton / Dark Floral Tank / Small / $14.50

Free People / Turquoise Tank / XS / $16.50

Mad About Vintage Fashion

If you walk down the halls of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, you will no doubt see the quintessential style of the modern 1960's working woman. In a decade adorned with posh cuts and polka dots it doesn't take too much to recreate the looks from that great time period. So, grab your pearls and a fab pair of kitten heels and you can step right out of the television set into a mad vintage fashion obsession.

Be inspired by Betty, Joan and Peggy with these classic looks from Blackbird Attic:

Warm Cozy Knits

This time of year, especially in the Northeast, it's nice to curl up in front of the fire place, sipping on hot cocoa (five marshmallows minimum) in a warm, comfy, cozy sweater. Men and women alike have many styles to choose from slouchy and vintage to fitted and modern. One thing is for sure is that patterns and stripes are a must.

Sparkle & Fade

One of the most catchy rock album's of the 90's was Everclear's Sparkle & Fade. And ironically, many things that were made in the 90's are now vintage. Which is great for shoppers of thrift stores in need of a shiny outfit for NYE (nice segway, right?).

For a muted but shiny and silky look, this bronze dress from the DressBarn is perfect for a house party or VIP at the club:

DressBarn Bronze Silky Dress, $19.99.
The best part of any outfit are the accessories, these vintage coin purses are small enough for just the essentials!

Vintage Whiting Davis Gold Coin Purse, $7.

Whiting Davis Black Sequin Pouch, $8
Vintage Black Beaded Purse, $12 / Vintage Whiting Davis Gold Patterned Purse, $19.99

One of the lovely things about Anthropologie is that many of the pieces they carry are new, but look vintage. It's like the best combo ever. This dress is casual enough for a summer day with great gladiator sandals or paired with opaque black tights and sparkly heels for ringing in the New Year!

Anthropologie Moulinette Soeurs Tier Dress, $39.99

Happy Shopping and Happy 2013!
