Burning Red

There's just something about the color Red. It's classic, for sure. When I think of Red, I think of the 1940's-bright red lipstick, bright red nails and how they both drove the men wild.

The color red signifies passion-a hate, a love, a lust...you can see red just about anytime anywhere. It's such a powerful color that Taylor Swift dedicated a whole album to it.

Anyhow, just in case you also like to see Red, Blackbird Attic has plenty of Red items or Red inspired items. See for yourself below:

Not Everything Is Black & White

There was a time in the world when black and white weren't considered colors and even some die hard scientist geeks also still believe that it's a debatable issue (read up on it, here). Regardless, black is one of the most popular shades in closets--it goes with mostly everything, it's supposed to make you look thinner and you will always look chic no matter the ocassion.

Despite many designers (and Netflix TV shows) sprouting the idea that XX color is the new black, it just never quite gets dethroned. We're loving the black (and some white and gray) selections from our boutique below:

Free People Bustier Dress I Size Small I $24.99

Madewell Broadway Broome Black Lace Top I Size Medium I $18.50

Anthropologie Coquille Shorts I Size Small I $16.50

Tory Burch Reva Black Suede Flats I Size 8.5 I $55 I Retail $235

Our contest is still going on! Don't forget to Tweet, Facebook, Insta whatever your social media poison is, use the hashtag: #BlackbirdAttic30 for a $30 gift card.

Progressional Patterns

I've never been a huge "prints" person. My preference is to take a solid, bold color and accessorize the crap out of it. However, there are a few patterns that can make their way into my closet--anything leopard, maybe a cool chevron and perhaps a paisley. In an effort to move out of my comfort zone, I've been trying to incorporate more patterns into this Spring's haul. The pattern selection at Blackbird Attic is on point. Check out some of my favorites below:

Can you tell we're a little obsessed with Anthropologie? Can you blame us? The tank of the left is extremely versatile as you can wear it with slacks for work, a jean skirt for a casual weekend or skinny jeans and heels for a night out. The tunic on the right is perfect for a backyard BBQ or strolling for antiques.

Right: Anthropologie Fei Plaid Tunic I Size 6 I $18
Left: Anthropologie Floral Tank I Small I $14.99

One thing is for sure, you don't have to be a member of a fancy boat club to rock this sailboat printed skirt. Wear with a crisp white button down for a casual business meeting or pair with a slouchy white T for an afternoon at the flea market.
Talbots Sailboat Skirt I Size 8P I $17.50

When I look at this Kate Moss dress, I want to be frolicking through Coachella or Bonnaroo barefoot wearing a flower crown.
Kate Moss Top Shop Dess I Size 6 I $18
Despite it's bright colors and pattern, this tank can be work many ways. Try pairing it with jeans, skinny or flare, tucked in (mullet-style) with a black skirt and heels and also with a white flowy maxi for a nice contrast.
Zac Posen for Target I Medium I $9.50

Don't forget we have a contest going on! When you share this post, and why wouldn't you, use the hashtag #BlackbirdAttic30 to win a $30 gift card to the store!

Happy shopping!

You're Invited: The White Party

Some years ago, when Puff Daddy was cool, he hosted the hottest (and brightest) party of the summer in the Hamptons: The White Party. Anyone who was anyone was invited and encouraged to wear white, before Labor Day...natch. And, though, white parties can mean different things to different people, it has us inspired to plan one to celebrate the impending summer season.

Lots of bloggers and fashion editors will tell you that it IS OK to wear white before and after Labor Day-fashion rules were always made to be broken, darlings.

Our white party outfit inspiration starts below...

Anthropologie Tiny Brand Cardigan I Size Small I $17.50

AG The Ballad Boot Cut Pants I Size 27R I $29.99

Anthropologie C Keer Folded Wings Top I Size S I $17.50

Dressing for the Occasion

I gotta say...I love that the weather seems to be warming up, but like the bi-polar biatch she is, Mother Nature keeps throwing curve balls our way. So, if you're like me, it's a daily struggle to pull a perfect-for-the-weather outfit when it just keeps changing at the drop of hail. I tend to gravitate towards mid-length dresses and boots this time of year, it seems to keep me warm enough but also allows for me to nix the tights. Below are some transitional pieces from Blackbird Attic, available now!

All of these dresses are so versatile in the fact that you can pair them with boots, a boyfriend cardi, a cool leather jacket or just wear it alone and you have SO many looks to choose from. I guess the question you really have to answer is: "Who do I want to be today?"

Flower Power

Source
A phrase coined in the 1960s and 1970s, flower power has a peaceful meaning--hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair etc.

Abundant in the Spring, flowers along with pastels can be a great addition to your closet. Blackbird Attic has the following in stock:

Wear with a pair of high-waisted flares and some platforms and you have a groovy outfit.
Anthropologie Edme & Esyllte I Size 8 I $18

This dress is so versatile it's ridiculous--pair with heels and some fancy jewelry for a night out, or with wedge or gladiator sandals for a casual day look.
Anthropologie Lilka Floral Ruffle Dress I Medium I $17.50
I love the color palette within this Free People dress. Have fun with this and wear just as vibrant of colors on your feet and accessories.
Free People Dress I $24.99 I Small-Medium
While I'm not a fan of the black tights in the photo, you can use black accessories to accompany this flowerful frock.
Silence Noise I Small I $13.50

Bohemian Rhapsody- Outfit Inspirarion

Some of my favorite looks in the entire world are inspired by the "peace and love" era of the 60's and 70's. For the past 10 years or so designers have incorporated "hippie" elements into their collections and dubbed the looks "bohemian." Kate Hudson, Vanessa Hudgens and many more fashion-forward celebs rock this (hopefully) never ending trend that pays homage to a country just wanting to live in harmony (and without bras).

Stores like Free People, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters are some of the trend-setting places to continue to find up-to-date bohemian looks, and luckily, Blackbird Attic carries many pieces from them.

Style Tip 1: The gray stripe tank will look super cute with a white maxi skirt and brown boots.
Anthropologie / Eloise / Gray Stripe Button Tank / X-Small / $13.50

Anthropologie / Ric Rac / Gray Striped Top / Small / $14.50

Style Tip 2: Pair the floral tank from Anthropologie with some cut off shorts or destructed jeans for a roughed up girly look.
Anthropologie / Pinkerton / Dark Floral Tank / Small / $14.50

Free People / Turquoise Tank / XS / $16.50

Sparkle & Fade

One of the most catchy rock album's of the 90's was Everclear's Sparkle & Fade. And ironically, many things that were made in the 90's are now vintage. Which is great for shoppers of thrift stores in need of a shiny outfit for NYE (nice segway, right?).

For a muted but shiny and silky look, this bronze dress from the DressBarn is perfect for a house party or VIP at the club:

DressBarn Bronze Silky Dress, $19.99.
The best part of any outfit are the accessories, these vintage coin purses are small enough for just the essentials!

Vintage Whiting Davis Gold Coin Purse, $7.

Whiting Davis Black Sequin Pouch, $8
Vintage Black Beaded Purse, $12 / Vintage Whiting Davis Gold Patterned Purse, $19.99

One of the lovely things about Anthropologie is that many of the pieces they carry are new, but look vintage. It's like the best combo ever. This dress is casual enough for a summer day with great gladiator sandals or paired with opaque black tights and sparkly heels for ringing in the New Year!

Anthropologie Moulinette Soeurs Tier Dress, $39.99

Summer Windows, Here They Are!

 Photos by Courtney Scalzo

As promised, some better photos of my summer shop windows! My intern Ngoc started by painting the windows with regular acrylic paint. It's pretty easy to get this stuff off windows, you just get it wet and scrap it off. It's a nice little non permanent, yet lasting, idea to be used in your home on any windows or glass surface.

Next she made the backdrop for the blue window by painting regular poster paper (in a roll, bought from Michaels Craft store) with a sponge brush. I really like the texture feel of it, it reminds me of fabric. To achieve this she just watered down the paint. I bought the rope from Home Depot and the little nautical accessories were on sale at Michaels.

To make the coral, we just used 2 coffee filters, folded them in half, cut the tips off, and stapled for a dart effect. Then turned inside out, we poked our fingers in them by the staples to puff them out a bit before painting them with watered down acrylic paint. The white ones really remind me a of jellyfish. You could make a cute mobile or something similar out of them!

The white hanging balls were pre-made from Michaels, I wish they had LED lights in them, but they are simple and pretty alone. I used shells, coral, and driftwood from my own beach ventures to further accent, and threw the vintage sewing machine in there because it's so darn cool and works the fashion angle of the shop ; ).

That's about it. Like I always say, they look nicer in person, so visit soon!
